This 12-day adventure, spanning 300km along two scenic roads, took us through three distinct chapters: Banff, the bustling heart of Canada's first National Park; Lake Louise, home to the stunning glacial lake that lives up to its hype; and Jasper, a tranquil mountain town that captured our hearts.
Banff: Gateway to the Rockies
Banff, a 90-minute drive from Calgary, is the perfect starting point for your Rocky Mountain adventure. Banff Avenue, the town's main street, offers a vibrant mix of shops, restaurants, and a glimpse of mountain life. Our charming bed and breakfast, just a few blocks away, provided a cozy home base for exploring the area.
Our first wildlife encounter, a deer, occurred just steps from our accommodation, setting a hopeful tone for spotting more iconic Canadian animals. The Banff Gondola, a must-do attraction, whisked us 2,000 feet up Sulphur Mountain for panoramic views of six different peaks. The summit boardwalk and visitor center provide ample opportunities to relax and soak in the scenery.
Lakes, Canyons, and Culinary Delights
A short drive from Banff Town lies Lake Minnewanka, Banff's largest lake. The scenic route is dotted with picturesque stops like Cascade Ponds, Johnson Lake, and Two Jack Lake. A boat cruise on Lake Minnewanka offers a unique perspective of the surrounding mountains, followed by a relaxing hike to Stewart Canyon.
Banff's culinary scene is diverse and caters to every taste. From the quintessential Canadian poutine to upscale dining experiences, there's something for everyone. The Grizzly House, a popular steak and fondue restaurant, provided a memorable dining experience.

Lake Louise, a glacial lake framed by majestic mountains, is an iconic destination. The Fairmont Hotel, perched on the lake's edge, offers luxurious accommodations and breathtaking views. A hike to the historic Lake Agnes Tea House is a must, rewarding hikers with stunning panoramas and a well-deserved cup of tea.
Our time at Lake Louise was punctuated by incredible wildlife sightings, including a rare white grizzly bear and a black bear near the charming town of Field. Moraine Lake, another stunning glacial lake, captivated us with its serene beauty and became a personal favorite.
Jasper: Tranquility and Wildlife Encounters
Jasper National Park, Canada's largest Rocky Mountain park, offers a more tranquil experience compared to Banff. The town of Jasper, with its relaxed atmosphere and charming main street, provided a welcome respite. Our cabin accommodation offered a taste of mountain living and close encounters with wildlife.
A rafting trip down the Athabasca River provided an exhilarating adventure, while the Icefields Parkway, a scenic drive connecting Lake Louise and Jasper, offered breathtaking views and access to the Athabasca Glacier and Icefield Walkway. Our final days in Jasper were filled with more wildlife sightings, including multiple bear encounters and a memorable visit to Maligne Lake.
