Alaska Cruise Adventure: A First-Timer's Journey on the Discovery Princess
Setting Sail on the Discovery Princess: An Alaskan Adventure
Alaska, a land of breathtaking landscapes and rich history, offers a truly unique American experience. From its Russian heritage to its diverse terrain of icebergs, charming towns, and temperate rainforests, Alaska beckons adventurers from all corners of the globe. This vast state, nearly three times the size of Texas and boasting more coastline than all the lower 48 states combined, has become a prime destination for seafaring travelers. When Princess Cruises offered me a 7-day Alaskan tour aboard the Discovery Princess, I couldn't resist the call of the wild.
A Floating Palace: The Discovery Princess
The Discovery Princess, a magnificent vessel measuring 1,100 feet long and boasting 19 decks, is a floating palace capable of accommodating 3,500 guests. Our journey took us through the Inside Passage, a mesmerizing waterway dotted with over 1,000 islands and American fjords. From Vancouver, we set sail for Juneau, the state capital, followed by Sitka, the charming coastal town featured in the movie "The Proposal," and then Ketchikan, the "Salmon Capital of the World," before finally docking in Seattle, Washington.
Stepping onboard, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the Italian-inspired piazza. This impressive entrance sets the tone for the luxurious experience that awaits. My mini-suite became my personal haven, complete with a private balcony offering breathtaking views of the Alaskan landscape and the calming sounds of the open sea.
Technological Marvels and Personalized Service
One of the most impressive features of the Discovery Princess is the Medallion, a wearable device that interacts with 7,000 onboard proximity sensors. This innovative technology allows for seamless experiences, such as automatic door unlocking, personalized service, and easy meetups with fellow travelers. Ordering drinks by the jacuzzi or a 5 am coffee from the comfort of my bed became effortless, adding a touch of magic to the cruise experience.
Exploring Alaska's Coastal Gems
Our first port of call, Juneau, offered a glimpse into Alaska's history and natural wonders. While inclement weather unfortunately canceled my planned seaplane excursion to the Mendenhall Glacier and whale watching tour, I explored Juneau's charming downtown, steeped in Gold Rush history and dotted with jewelry stores. The evening brought a culinary highlight: Princess Cruises' 360, an immersive dining experience that took us on a gastronomic journey through the Mediterranean, complete with choreographed service, interactive surroundings, and exquisite cuisine.
Sitka, our second stop, captivated me with its natural beauty and rich history. From the National Historical Park, a prime spot for eagle watching, to the totem trail, Sitka offers a blend of nature and culture. St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral, a testament to Sitka's Russian heritage, and the site where Alaska was formally transferred to the US, are must-see landmarks.
Ketchikan, the "Salmon Capital of the World," lived up to its name. Witnessing the annual salmon run, where millions of salmon journey upstream to spawn, was a truly remarkable sight. Creek Street, a picturesque boardwalk with a colorful past as the former red light district, added another layer of intrigue to our Ketchikan experience.
Cruise Life and Culinary Delights
Life on the Discovery Princess offered a plethora of entertainment and dining options. From Broadway-style musicals and magic shows to live music and Mario Kart challenges, there was never a dull moment. The diverse culinary offerings, ranging from self-service buffets to à la carte dining in five different restaurants, provided a delightful gastronomic journey. A highlight was the champagne breakfast on my balcony, enjoyed while cruising through Yakutat Bay and witnessing the magnificent Hubbard Glacier.
